Moral and ethics, racism and slavery, and hypocritical society are just some of the targeted issues presented in the novel. With a "sound heart" triumphing over a "deformed conscience," Huck decides he'll "go to hell" rather than give his friend Jim up to slavery.

I wish there was a moat to this cabin. At various times in the novel, Huck mentions that Tom would put more "style" in Jim and his adventure. This is seen when Huck considers sending a letter to Ms. They decide to travel down the river together. But his skewed logic regarding how an illegal act becomes legal only points to his lack of understanding.

Huck is an archetypal innocent, able to discover the "right" thing to do despite the prevailing theology and prejudiced mentality of the South of that era. When Tom shows up again near the end of the book and pledges to help Huck free Jim, Huck expresses these words of disbelief. Disappointed at their lack of income, the duke and the king betray Huck and Jim, and sell Jim back into slavery. However, Huck continues to stay with Jim as they travel, despite his belief that he is breaking all of society and religion's tenets.
