Soon, a thriving German community established itself in the Valley, and along with German language newspapers, German architectural styles, and religious institutions, they also brought with them a distinctive aesthetic tradition of wood craftsmanship that remains a hallmark of German-American culture. Working with partner publishers, libraries and labs, we aim to create tools for researchers, teachers and students that are immediately useful — and a little bit magical. To underscore the urgency of this historic preservation work, the book also includes a chapter on important buildings that were not saved from the wrecking ball.
